Every exterior painting project starts with the same conversation: what's not working about the current look, and what does the homeowner want to feel when they pull into their driveway? For this Bellevue custom home, the answer was clear. The existing exterior — a builder-spec tan with white trim — felt generic and out of step with the home's architecture and the surrounding landscape. The homeowners wanted something grounded, sophisticated, and unmistakably Pacific Northwest.

The Starting Point

The home is a two-story craftsman-influenced custom build on a wooded Bellevue lot. The original paint — applied by the builder about eight years prior — was showing its age. The tan body color had faded unevenly on the south-facing walls. Paint was peeling along the garage trim and at several window casings where caulking had failed. The white trim, once crisp, had yellowed and lost definition against the body color. It was time — and it was time to do it properly.

The Color Selection Process

We spent a full consultation session with the homeowners working through color directions. They were drawn to deep, nature-inspired tones and wanted to move away from anything that felt beige or conventional. We explored the deep olive and forest green family, a range of warm charcoals, and a sophisticated dark blue-green. We applied large sample swatches in three candidate colors directly on the home's north and south elevations and observed them over two days in different light conditions.

The final selection: a deep forest green for the main body (Sherwin-Williams' Hunt Club), crisp warm white for all trim and fascia (Benjamin Moore White Dove), and a deep charcoal for the front door and garage doors. The combination reads as confident, natural, and expensive — exactly what the homeowners were after.

The Prep Work

Prep on this project was extensive, which is typical for an eight-year exterior in the PNW. We power-washed the entire home, let it dry fully, then went through systematically. All failing caulk was removed and replaced with a high-quality paintable sealant. Peeling sections were scraped and sanded. Bare wood was spot-primed. The garage trim and window casings that had showed the most wear were given special attention — sanded smooth, primed with a bonding primer, and inspected before paint was applied.

This prep process took a full day before any finish paint was applied. It's the kind of work that's invisible in the final result — which is exactly the point.

The Application

We applied two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior in the selected colors, working systematically around the home. Body first, then trim, then the front door and garage doors as accent elements. Dry time between coats was respected fully — no rushing to finish by a certain day. Total project duration was four days from start to walkthrough.

The Result

The transformation was significant. The home went from looking like an aging builder spec to looking like a custom property that belongs precisely where it is — among Pacific Northwest trees, with architecture that the color selection now reinforces rather than ignores. The homeowners' first words when they saw the completed front elevation were exactly what we hope to hear at the end of every project.
